Campaign for Kindness - What is it?
There’s a phrase, commonly known as The Golden Rule, that simply states: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matthew 7:12) A version of this teaching can be found in almost every major religion. This universal rule holds the power to bring people together.
Do Unto Others is a grassroots movement launched by Resurrection United Methodist Church (Adam Hamilton is the pastor) in the Kansas City area, to encourage people to be intentional about treating one another with kindness, even those with whom we disagree. A vote for kindness is a step toward overcoming the polarization in our country through civility and respect.
Wesley United Methodist Church is among over 1000 faith communities and other organizations participating in the 2024 Campaign for Kindness (campaignforkindness.com).
What are we doing at Wesley in October 2024?
At Wesley, our plans are:
- Do Unto Others yard signs are now available at Wesley Church.
- Do Unto Others T-shirts - T-shirt ordering has closed.
- Pre-ordered T-shirts can now be picked up at church. The shirts come in two colors - gray and purple - and are made from ultra-soft ringspun cotton. They cost $10.
- Pastor Don will be preaching a four-week sermon series on the power of kindness.
- Our children and youth Sunday School classes will be using a Kindness curriculum designed for them.
- We have Do Unto Others yard signs. You may pick one up for your yard - until supplies last.
- Adult Sunday school classes are being asked to also join, by studying the Cultivating Kindness through Scripture and Community: A Four-Week “Do Unto Others” Study for Adult Small Groups.
Moving Forward
Although the Campaign for Kindness is particularly useful in the lead up to the 2024 election, our hope is that kindness towards others will continue to grow well beyond the campaign and become a regular part of our culture.
