Marian Swisher Celebration of Life
Dr. Marian Olga Toedtmann Swisher was born July 8, 1932 in Pershing, Missouri to Clarence and Olivia Meyer Toedtmann and died May 24, 2025 at her home in Macomb, Illinois. Her life will be celebrated at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Macomb Illinois at 12:00 pm June 29.
Marian graduated from Hermann High School in Hermann, Missouri in 1950 and graduated from Central Missouri State Teachers College in 1953 with a BS in Vocational Home Economics. She married James D. Swisher on August 16, 1957 and began her teaching career in Concordia, Missouri. Marian taught home economics in public schools in Missouri until 1976 when, after the early death of her husband, she moved to Columbia, Missouri to join the instructional staff in teacher education and complete her PhD. in Vocational Home Economics. She joined the staff of Western Illinois University in the fall of 1978 where she taught many subjects and trained future home economics teachers. She chaired the department for several years and retired from full time teaching in 1998. In recent years, Marian served her community through various civic organizations. She was an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and UWF. Marian loved to quilt, play bridge, read and garden. She surrounded herself with a wide group of friends and often traveled to visit her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, her husband,a son-in-law, a daughter and a grandson.She is survived by three children, Annette Robinson, Warrensburg, MO, Scott Swisher (Melissa) Brainerd, MN, and Sara Oxtoby (William) Bellevue, NE. She is survived by six grandchildren, Elizabeth Meyer (Alex) Urbandale, IA, Matthew Robinson, Warrensburg, MO, Tyler Robinson (Sarah) Kansas City, MO, Andrew Oxtoby (Liz) Omaha, NE, David Oxtoby, Bellevue, NE, and Sam Swisher (Anna) of Minneapolis, MN. She is survived by three great grandchildren, Thomas, James and Benjamin Meyer of Urbandale, MN.
